OverviewWinstead is a persuasive advocate on the efficacy of alternative energy before lawmakers and regulatory authorities. Our team of lobbyists and lawyers promote clients interests and protect their competitive rights in the marketplace. In the process, we educate decision makers and negotiate to common ground to achieve our clients’ goals. In the area of wind project development, Winstead was active in legislation that opened opportunities for an estimated $3 billion in new investments. For alternative energy clients—such as developers in solar, hydroelectricity, biodiesel and biomass—Winstead’s Government Relations team can help manage challenges and lead advocacy initiatives involving:
- Siting legislation
- Reclamation legislation
- Local government authority over renewable energy projects
- Economic development tools to achieve economies of scale, including tax credits, incentives and mandates
Representative legislative engagements include:
- Developing Wind Generation – Helping to draft and pass legislation for the target amount of wind energy to be developed in the state by increasing the MW in the mandatory Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) laws.
- Protecting RPS – Helping negotiate an agreement to maintain the RPS. We also spent considerable efforts in explaining the CREZ process, which improves planning for the transmission process.
- Decommissioning – Manage issues related to decommissioning and remediation for developers and operators in the wind energy sector.
