Pro Bono

Winstead greatly supports the right to legal representation, especially access for the less fortunate, marginalized and disadvantaged. Our attorneys, paralegals and legal assistants donate numerous hours each year to a wide variety of organizations and individuals. Below are a few representative pro bono projects:

Assistance to the indigent:

  • Working with FUNED of Honduras, a Tegucigalpa-based organization to provide life-transforming business loans in third-world countries
  • Represented an AIDS victim threatened with eviction
  • Assisted disabled persons with obtaining and sustaining social security benefits so they could support their families
  • Represented a father in custody proceedings involving his son, where the mother had already killed the daughter by violent shaking
  • Counseled indigents faced with deportation and other immigration-related issues
  • Assisted in numerous divorce and custody proceedings
  • Participated in the ABA’s Death Penalty Representation Project and provided assistance in several habeas corpus proceedings
  • Defended and ensured due process for indigents charged with lesser crimes

Assistance to nonprofit organizations:

  • Volunteered legal time and resources to assist a Houston nonprofit organization that places hard-to-adopt children in caring homes
  • Assisted the South Dallas Inner-City Community Development Corporation in taking ownership of five properties for development of community projects in Dallas
  • Counseled ARTS Center Stage, an Austin nonprofit supervising the redevelopment of the Municipal Auditorium
  • Donated legal services, money and other resources to assist in the design, permitting and construction of a building for Vogel Alcove, a day-care facility for homeless children
