This program provides the vital updates you and your clients need to know about how employment and employee benefits laws have evolved and are continuing to evolve.  Changes in rules, regulations, and EEOC and court interpretations of existing laws are changing the landscape of employment issues affecting LGBT employees.  Additionally, the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in U.S. v. Windsor on June 26, 2013, has raised numerous questions for employers and employees alike regarding policies affecting and benefits afforded to same-sex couples.  Through this course, you will understand the employee benefit plan changes that are needed or may be needed by the end of this year as the result of guidance issued by the various governmental agencies regulating employee benefit plans, and what these changes mean for employees.

Topics include:

  • Learn about Local, State, and Federal Employment Non-Discrimination laws, regulations, and orders that impact employers
  • Understand what discrimination "because of sex" means under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, including discussion of recent "sexual stereotyping" cases and guidance from the EEOC
  • Understand the law as it relates to claims based on transgender / gender identity discrimination.
  • Receive practical tips to avoid discrimination and retaliation, and thereby avoid discrimination, retaliation, and wrongful termination claims.
  • Learn about the recent guidance from the federal government agencies regulating employee benefit plans and what this means for employees and what employers need to be doing.
  • Understand the tax implications to watch for related to employee benefit plans recognizing same sex spouses
  • Understand some of the challenges employers face in implementing these changes

Search Tips:

You may use the wildcard symbol (*) as a root expander.  A search for "anti*" will find not only "anti", but also "anti-trust", "antique", etc.

Entering two terms together in a search field will behave as though an "OR" is being used.  For example, entering "Antique Motorcars" as a Client Name search will find results with either word in the Client Name.

Operators

AND and OR may be used in a search.  Note: they must be capitalized, e.g., "Project AND Finance." 

The + and - sign operators may be used.  The + sign indicates that the term immediately following is required, while the - sign indicates to omit results that contain that term. E.g., "+real -estate" says results must have "real" but not "estate".

To perform an exact phrase search, surround your search phrase with quotation marks.  For example, "Project Finance".

Searches are not case sensitive.
